Passenger rail plan aims to reconnect Montana cities
The Federal Railroad Administration has submitted a final report to the U.S. Congress, marking a significant step forward. The route will restore passenger service between Fargo, North Dakota, and Sandpoint, Idaho, which has not seen service in over 40 years.
The plan was deemed feasible and would provide twice-daily service, with two trains running in each direction daily. This service will utilize existing rail infrastructure, enhancing it to accommodate both freight and passenger operations.
Dave Strohmaier, Chairman of the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority, emphasized using current infrastructure. "So the important thing for folks to recognize is that where you see freight trains today is where you will see passenger trains in the future," he said. "We're not talking about greenfield development creating a rail line that does not exist today."
